I remember when my grandparents had a party line with a different ring pattern for each of the 3-4 parties. There was always someone talking when you picked up the phone & grandpa would say, "can you hang up I need to make a call."

I remember less & less each passing year.

When having a colour TV was a big deal.

I remember when having a TV was exciting.

My brother and I sat forever on Saturday morning watching that Indian Chief test pattern waiting for the National Anthem to begin,as we held our hand over our heart and then Mighty Mouse is on the way -- Mighty Mouse will save the day.

Turning on the television before my parents woke up, and looking at the test patterns before the regular scheduled programs came on.

Now I could care less about what's on. The test patterns are more interesting.

When you had a "old" car that burned a lot of oil - You would use Bulk oil that came in a 1 qt Mason jar, It even had a metal funnel to help pour. Sold at most gas stations. (Used filtered oil).

But do you remember that the telephone company owned said telephones? The monthly bill included your calls, as well as the telephone rental fees. And if you wanted more telephones, you had to pay additional fess.

I (acquired) one from a relative that moved away. Which I still have to this day. And I disconnected the ringer portion of it. Reason being, at the time, the telephone company used to randomly call you. They could tell from their end of it from the rings, just how many telephones were on your line.

So if more telephones rang than what they were renting out to you, you got a nasty little bill increase / notice. This is my history lesson to everyone for the day.)

Yes, but do you remember when the grocery store in the community is the only one who had a telephone and the whole community usesd that one phone if they needed to make/receive a call?

Me neither but my mom did. My grandmother and grandfather got the first "at home" phone in our community. I was there when they came to install it.

Each home BTW only received one (1) connection terminal there were no "extension phones" back then.

My first visit to the Sears Tower in the 1970's, when it only was a dime for local calls, it was over a dollar just to call from the top floor of the Sears Tower down to the ground floor. I never did find out what it cost at the time to call out.

Speaking of Dimes:

Up until the 70s if one used the public restroom in say.... a department store... Kresge... Macy... and the like... you had to put a dime in the little metal box on the door for the door to open.
